Root Diseases of Urban Trees
Oak root fungus (Armillaria spp.) and crown rot (Phytophthora spp.) are, perhaps, the two most serious pest problems in the irrigated landscape. Both pathogens are wide-spread and affect many plant species in California. Armillaria can be found wherever oaks grow or once grew, and it is a particular problem in and around riparian habitats. Crown rot, an introduced species, spread readily in soil, containerized plants and even on shoes. It is most common in wet, poorly drained or heavily irrigated sites. There are several other decaying-causing pathogens that can affect tree health and stability. Management strategies usually involve changing irrigation practices, planting nursery stock so that the root collar is not buried, and modifying soil characteristics (improving structure and drainage)
